Hypselobarbus jerdoni (Jerdon's Barb, Puntius jerdoni)
A large barb with a streamlined body and deeply forked tail. The body is silvery with large scales and the pelvic, anal, and caudal fins are marked with red-orange. There is a black tip to the dorsal fin.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A typical large barb in terms of care. This is a peaceful, schooling fish that is distinctly omnivorous and needs a diet containing both plant material and small invertebrates such as bloodworms. Also enjoys flakes and pellets. Wild fish are largely detritivores, feeding in midwater and from the substrate, taking in debris, algae, and decaying plant material.
Wild fish tend to inhabit fast-flowing waters, so providing these fish with good water quality and lots of oxygen is important. They should not be kept too warm!
Not bred in home aquaria.
