Thorichthys (Cichlasoma) meeki(Firemouth Cichlid)

A common cichlid which is often seen in shops. A distinct looking fish with a bright red/orange colouration around the gills which extends across the belly into the anal fin. The redness in the male increases at breeding time.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Fairly peaceful although they can be a little aggressive towards their own kind, especially at breeding time.
Difficult to sex and if you have space it is best to buy a group of juveniles and grow them on until a pair form. When in condition the males develop longer trails on their dorsal and anal fins, although this method cannot always be relied upon. In breeding condition a female will look more rounded.
These fish will accept most water conditions although for breeding neutral to slightly alkaline is best. They have a tendency to uproot plants. Decor in the tank should include caves and a flowerpot which will be used as the spawning site. They tend to make good parents although if space allows you should remove the parents once the fry have become free swimming and feed with usual fry foods such as baby brine shrimp.

Family Group: South and Central American Cichlids
Distribution Yucatan Peninsular, Mexico
Temperature 24-28C
Size Around 16cm
Water Parameters Slightly alkaline conditions are preferred
Water PH 7.2-8.0
