Mastacembelus brichardi(Blind Spiny Eel, Caecomastacembelus brichardi)

Fairly large, pale pink eel-like fish. The dorsal fin includes a number of very sharp spines that can quickly become entangled in a net; if mishandled, these can also cut into your skin.

Spiny eels can be tricky fish for beginners because they are very prone to escaping through gaps in the hood of the aquarium. They are also very nocturnal (at least until settled in) and usually only accept live or frozen foods. Earthworms, river shrimps, and bloodworms can make a good basic diet. They will also eat any small fish they can catch.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Peaceful, predatory fish that from rapids and needs an aquarium with plenty of current and rheophilic tankmates. Requires plenty of hiding places (which cichlids will also want as well). It also likes to dig, so a soft sandy substrate is desirable. When spiny eels are forced to dig into gravel they frequently damage their skins, and become infected with mysterious bacterial infection from which they never recover.
